Laurence Broydé

Artist in residence

Residency

AXENÉO7 welcomes artist Laurence Broydé (Nantes, France) for a research and creation residency from December 5, 2022 to January 27, 2023, as part of a partnership resulting from a cross-residencies agreement concluded between the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) and le Lieu Unique (Nantes, France).

Laurence Broydé will present her work process with studio opening on the occasion of Yann Pocreau's exhibition opening on January 18, 2023 from 7 to 11PM.

My work revisits art forms at the intersection of craft, art and design. It reconsiders the status of the work, while exploring the questions of the environment, territories and “minority.” I develop a body of sculptural works using crochet, a practice considered feminine, artisanal, “minor” and even obsolete.

In the Sculptures à Porter (Wearable Sculptures), non-gendered transitional elements, allow for metamorphosis, setting aside questions of species and gender as well as their usual representation, in order to move beyond the nature/culture duality. As such, they constitute a form of animistic and totemic ontology, placing art and the work at the centre of social organization. This work examines the role of transitional objects such as works of art in our current societies. By being worn, the sculptures are humanized, leading us beyond anthropomorphism. The produced forms are metaphorically and physically inhabited. They activate narratives with open interpretations and produce various potentially usable objects, exploitable, and to experiment.

When they are not performed,  Sculptures à Porter are presented passively on wooden or ceramic sculptures. Displayed in places dedicated to art or in liminal sites (building entrances, corridors, etc.), they invite the public to appropriate the exhibition space as a common space, activating aesthetic processes, diverting and re-envisioning them, thereby allowing for the experimentation of new exhibition processes.

Laurence Broydé graduated from ESAD Orléans in Graphic Design and studied Illustration at the Arts décoratifs de Strasbourg (HEAR).

Introduced to dance at a very young age, her frequent visits to the conservatory shows will inevitably and durably trigger a fascination for the "heterotopic" places that she will never cease to invent. She develops numerous collaborations with storytellers and puppeteers for whom she designs painted canvases and sets for shows, then sets that give her the opportunity to leave the frame and the 2D space to experiment with other dimensions. In 2000, she joined the artists' collective Alaplage (dissolved in 2007) which is also an exhibition space run by artists.

For a long time, she worked as a mediator at the FRAC Midi-Pyrénées, then taught graphic design in graduate school. She has been living and working in Nantes for the past three years, where she has a studio within the BONUS collective, Ateliers d'artistes de la ville de Nantes. She has received several grants from the Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles and the Région Pays de la Loire.

Her research involves shifts between art, design, crafts and graphics.
