About

For more than forty years, AXENÉO7 has supported artists from the Outaouais and beyond by creating contexts for research, production, and presentation that foster the development of contemporary artistic practices. Through its projects, the centre encourages the circulation of practices, ideas, and people locally, nationally, and internationally.

Mission

Founded in 1983, AXENÉO7 is an artist-run centre dedicated to advocating, promoting, and exhibiting the visual arts, while developing critical discourse around them. It is a gathering place for sharing and experimentation. Through a critically engaged program, it endeavours to expand the parameters of artistic practice and its presentation, and to improve artists’ conditions for production.

Mandate

AXENÉO7’s programming encompasses exhibitions, residencies, research projects, performances, public engagement and knowledge-sharing activities, discussions, publications, and collaborations.

The program is developed by the Artistic Director in dialogue with the team, artists, members, committees, and the centre’s partners. Within this framework, AXENÉO7 supports artistic and curatorial practices at different stages of their development, from research and production through to presentation and circulation.

Commitments

Fair compensation

Fair compensation for artists is a fundamental commitment at AXENÉO7. The centre establishes its own compensation framework, using the CARFAC-RAAV Minimum Recommended Fee Schedule as its baseline. These terms are tailored to the nature of each project and to the realities of artists’ lives and practices, with the aim of ensuring fair and equitable compensation.

Accessibility

Established in 2022, AXENÉO7’s Accessibility Fund responds to the specific needs of artists and audiences to support their participation in the centre’s activities. It can be used to adapt working, creative, and participation conditions to a range of realities and life circumstances.

Values

Openness, commitment, and boldness guide AXENÉO7’s actions and decisions. These values are reflected in its attentiveness to the plurality of practices and voices, its enduring commitment to artists and communities, and its support for experimental approaches and risk-taking.

Spaces

AXENÉO7 is based in Gatineau, on the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation. At La Filature, the centre occupies three exhibition galleries as well as spaces dedicated to welcoming artists and audiences, research, and production.

Set in a former factory, La Filature has housed AXENÉO7 and DAÏMÔN production centre since 2002. Situated along Brewery Creek, it is an important site for contemporary art creation, production, presentation, and gathering in the Outaouais.

For opening hours, information about your visit, or to contact the team, see the Info page.

Participation

AXENÉO7 evolves with the artists, members, audiences, organizations, and partners who move through it. Becoming a member, taking part in a committee, responding to a call for proposals, or making a donation are all ways to participate in the life of the centre and support what comes next.

Depending on its programs and projects, AXENÉO7 periodically issues calls for proposals for exhibitions, residencies, research projects, or other collaborations. Current calls are announced in News and through the newsletter.
