- Exhibition
Exhibition resulting from the program Autorésidences.
Autorésidences is a remote residency program created by the AXENÉO7 artist-run centre in the exceptional context of the COVID-19 pandemic to continue to support research and development of current art practices.
Marie-France Brière's approach is based on the need to redefine certain parameters of sculptural work, exploring several avenues related to this evolving practice that involves rethinking actions and advocating new experiences that go beyond an object's purpose. Through a series of treatments and arrangements, she develops structures that reorganize inside and outside, the surface and its lining, with a view to increasing the creative tensions already amplified by material contrasts.
For this Autorésidences residency project, the artist seeks to echo the isolation context of the confinement in an unprecedented face-to-face encounter with the limits of her own constructions. How can a resilient thought be coaxed out of this austere solitude, this invisible weight that is rocking the whole world? Deviation and reconstitution of the sculptural object are the result of a duplication of the mineral immersed in the Anthropocene. Marie-France Brière uses selected materials to create compositions that ponder the disturbances of a landscape ecology, between interaction and the transformative process, excavation and depositing, shaping and aggregation.
Born in Montreal in 1957, Marie-France Brière obtained a Masters in Visual Arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal. Having obtained numerous grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts, and recipient of the Louis Comtois Prize (Montreal) in 1996, Marie-France Brière has developed over the years a research practice based on sculpture. Her work demonstrates the characteristics of the materials, their capacity for transformation, for distortion, and for revelation in order to examine and understand the nature of the world.
