Autorésidence

This residency stems from an invitation extended by artists Simon Brown, Pavel Pavlov, Marc A. Reinhardt, and Maude Veilleux—an initiative supported by AXENÉO7. It continues the textual reflections and conversations initiated during the fall 2024 iteration of the project Se limiter au maximum, presented at AXENÉO7.

Their camouflage consists of adjustable trousers, a buttoned jacket, and a hood. It is 2.7 kg of water-resistant synthetic thread. And silent—that matters! A blend of seven thread colors creates subtle shifts that blur the line between the human form and the rest of the living world, nestled in the rural or wooded edges of the suburbs. A base of beige thread woven with light olive mimics the fields in autumn and spring, when the grass turns yellow. But the collective’s project unfolded in summer, during a heatwave—neon yellow. Double stitching secures the threads, greatly reducing the shedding of fibers.

Among their gestures that muddle individuality, I am especially drawn to their sonic improvisations. What tender anarchy emerges from the silence of the ghillie suits!

The Autoresidency programme is an artist residency initiative launched by AXENÉO7 in 2020 in response to the pandemic context. Initially conducted remotely, the program has since evolved to welcome independent projects and research engaged with contemporary issues in artistic creation. It fosters a fluid relationship with the centre while transcending geographic, cultural, and disciplinary boundaries. The Autoresidencies offer artists a space for open experimentation, allowing them to explore new forms and contexts of creation.

Maude Pilon is a writer who operates across various collaborative, academic, union, medical, and artistic contexts. Her texts take the form of arranged readings, recordings, printed objects, and research-creation contributions published by presses and in journals. Her current research focuses on voluntary decline in mystical thought, writers’ journals, and artists’ writings. À midi, une joie is her most recent book, published by Les Herbes rouges (2024).
