This Autorésidence forms part of the Cursus prize, awarded to final-year visual arts students at UQO’s School of Arts and Culture (ÉdAC).
Through this residency, I am continuing the research-based creative work I began in early 2026 on the role of cement in mosaic art. I am exploring its potential by expanding beyond its traditional use of binding fragments together. I am exploring its structural, even sculptural, potential by using it in castings into which I incorporate drawings and other materials. I am also interested in the dialogue between the strength of the cement’s structure and the delicacy of its surface treatment. My quest combines materiality and sensitivity.
Manon Beausoleil, a multidisciplinary artist based in Gatineau, focuses on materials and the creative process. At first glance, nothing seems more intriguing to her than leaving the outcome of her work open-ended. Her vision is poetic and is expressed through pictorial and sculptural approaches. She is particularly fond of drawing, mosaics and sculpture, which she often practises in a DIY spirit. The search for materials is an integral part of her practice. She collects stones, ceramics and broken dishes. The discursive aspect is not the driving force behind her research. Rather, she focuses on what the materials and their transformation can reveal about themselves.
Having retired from teaching, she has resumed her work as a visual artist, which had been put on hold. She leads participatory mosaic projects and takes part in group exhibitions. She was awarded the Emerging Artist Prize at the most recent exhibition of the Mosaic Artists of Canada and received the Cursus prize from AXENÉO7 in the spring of 2026. She is currently undertaking a Master’s degree in museology and arts practices at UQO.
